The Canal du Midi
In general
The Canal du Midi is located in the south of France, the departments of Hérault, Aude and Haute-Garonne. Built between 1667 and 1681 by Pierre Paul Riquet, it is considered a masterpiece. Along 240 km from Toulouse to Agde, it connects the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
World Heritage
Formerly a tool for production, exchange and trade, the Canal du Midi is nowadays considered as an architectural and technical World Heritage as listed by UNESCO. It is the oldest canal in Europe, counting monuments of exceptional interest.
Exceptional rides
Lined with trees, pines, poplars and cypresses, its towpaths along the canal are now being used for walking. Toulouse to Sète or on smaller routes, it is ideal for the most beautiful ballads by walk or by bike.
